Altarpieces of Bizkaia
In this website we can enjoy 42 altarpieces ( what is an altarpiece? ), which are recognised by the Government of the Basque Country as a monument due to their peculiarity and representativeness.
They are part of chapels, churches and monasteries of Biscay (province in the Basque Country) and are real artistic treasures of our heritage. They are complex works of art in which architecture, sculpture and painting form a unity. These samples show the religious mind-set of an era and are historic documents which allow us to learn more about the society, the economy, the different ways of working, the artistic tastes or the commercial relations of Biscay with America and Europe.
